You see, Alliance leader Stockwell Day has promised that, if elected, his party will allow any issue brought forth by a petition of 3% of the electorate (approximately 350,000 Nucks) to a national referendum.
A Canadian referendum, incidentally, costs approximately $150 million.
Now, to only contest this referendum idea on monetary grounds alone would be a poor thing to do. This is why I so like the petition created by the folks at This Hour Has 22 Minutes (if you don't understand the name, it's an updated reference to the name of a CBC news program called This Hour Has Seven Days which ran from October 1964 to May 1966. The 22 minutes comes from the fact that a 30 minute TV show is actually 22 minutes long with 8 minutes set aside for commercials)
They have put forth their own petition:
If you are Canadian, please
take this pledge.
