June 16, 2000

Some people live for the Oscars. Others get all worked up over the Tony Awards. Me, I love the MacArthur 'Genius' Grants.

This year's recipients were just announced on June 12. Of note, poet Anne Carson is now the third Canadian to win such an award (the other two being Alberta archeologist Peter Mathews and Ontario scientist Susan Werner Kieffer).

You can read the bios of the this year's winners. These folks include a cartoonist, a paleontologist, an environmental business councilor, an independent radio producer (no, it's not Ira Glass), an assistant professor of physics (he better get tenure now), an architect, a professor of geochemistry, an advocate for people with disabilities, a neuroscientist, and a biomolecular computer scientist.

People like you and me.
